Movie Review: Jumper

Jumper
Rated PG-13 for sequences of intense action violence, some language and brief sexuality
Film-making: 31/2 out of 5 stars
Moral: 3 out of 5 stars
Overall: 31/2 out of 5 stars

Jumper was one of those movies that I thought would be completely stupid, yet ended up being a fun "roller-coaster ride" movie. With a lead by Hayden Christensen, and a superpower plot, Jumper didn't really have much going for it to begin with. Surprisingly, Hayden delivered a convincing performance as David Rice, a young man with teleportation powers and definitely redeemed his weak Star Wars acting jobs. Samuel Jackson brought some star power to the cast as the Jumper-hunter Roland, and little known Rachel Bilson played David's love interest Millie.

The effects and fight sequences in Jumper were really good, and definitely helped carry the plot forward. Unfortunately, the editor seemed to think that EVERY sequence needed effects and therefore proceeded to try and butcher the surprisingly really good plot. Thank goodness for good direction! While the sporatic and jumpy scene changes did distract from the movie, the story was very cool, based on a novel.

Morally, Jumper left something to be desired. Language was sparse, but included several instances of the s- word and one use of the f bomb. Sexual content was very brief, but once again the filmmakers saw the need to include sexual immorality. While nothing is shown, we see David and Millie begin to make out and unfortunately- begin to undress. While the scene changed right after this, it still left a bitter taste in one's mouth.

Overall, Jumper was a fun President's Day flick and I would recommend it for people who like superhero movies, sci-fi flicks and action/adventure movies. While the movie was not perfect, the offensive content was very brief and did not detract from the movie as a whole. If you have a problem with this, it would be a good DVD rental when it comes out.

My verdict, go see it.
